Join us for an Afro-Rave featuring South African music and dance, headlined by Toya Delazy and Nakhane

To celebrate the Zanele Muholi exhibition and Topher Campbell’s exhibition My rukus! Heart this special event features Toya Delazy and Nakhane who will infuse the night with powerful expressions of music, dance, and poetic song. There will also be special DJ sets from PRNCSS and Sweetny.Ivy to open and close the evening.

Zanele Muholi is supported by the Huo Family Foundation with additional support from the Zanele Muholi Supporters Circle and Tate Americas Foundation. Research supported by Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational in partnership with Hyundai Motor.

This event has been provided by Tate Gallery on behalf of Tate Enterprises Ltd.

Toya Delazy

Zulu musician Toya Delazy, now based in London, has been smashing down musical and cultural boundaries with aplomb, playing sold out shows across London, to Glastonbury, Mixmag or Keep Hush. From laid-back grooves to almost 200bpm and hefty pounding to extraordinarily complex polyrhythms, her beats and rhymes are multilingual, multicultural and multidimensional. Delazy’s Afrorave music encourages the listener to reimagine the experience of people of colour. However, its ideas transcend racial lines with messages of self-awareness, free expression and empowerment.

Nakhane

Nakhane, a South African artist, gained critical acclaim for their role in the 2017 film "Inxeba (The Wound)," winning four acting awards. In 2018, they released the autobiographical album "You Will Not Die" to international praise, relocating to London. Their latest album, "Bastard Jargon," dropped in March 2023, featuring collaborations with artists like Nile Rodgers and Perfume Genius. In 2024, Nakhane makes their directorial debut with "B(L)IND The Sacrifice," premiering at the Locarno Film Festival on August 17th.

PRNCSS

PRNCSS, a multi-disciplinary artist, producer, and DJ, experimenting with blends from genres such as Afrohouse/Tech, Amapiano, 3 Step, Gqom, and UK Bass in her unique sound. Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Dublin, Ireland, she currently calls the UK home, drawing inspiration from the diverse cultures she has encountered. Her art is a fusion of heavy bass music intertwined with African rhythms, making her a trailblazer in the Afrofuturism music scene.

Sweetny-Ivy

Sweetny-Ivy, managed by Larah Records, brings an electrifying fusion of deep/afro house, 3-step, gqom and Afro Tech. Proudly embracing her identity as a queer Ugandan, she has made it her mission to create spaces on the dance floor where everyone feels welcomed, celebrated, and free to express themselves. Her performances are about hearing and feeling the music in your bones eventually letting it guide your feet.
